About John Chapman

John Chapman was born on September 26, 1774 in Leominster, Massachusetts, and is better known as Johnny Appleseed. Beginning in 1802, Chapman wandered through Pennsylvania and eventually Ohio planting apple nurseries. Many of Ohio’s first orchards began with saplings from Chapman’s nurseries.

Now through the Chapman School of Leadership in Sustainability, Urbana University is planting the seeds of leadership in sustainability through educational programming. Whether it be by offering one of the University Leadership Summits and earning sustainability certification, or focusing on the completion of the MBA in Leadership in Sustainability, the Chapman School at Urbana University is the leader in personalized training in the growing field of sustainability.

The University

Founded in 1850 on land donated by a friend of John Chapman, Urbana University's location itself is a symbol of earth's richness with long-term sustainable agriculture, and natural resource diversity that includes Davey Woods, Cedar Bog, Mad River, and Simon Kenton Trail. Fully accredited by the North Central Association, Urbana University provides an education experience that enables students (traditional and adult) to live usefully, act responsibly, and learn relentlessly. Urbana University is committed to incorporating the tenets of sustainability in all that we do, including our infrastructure and grounds management, academic programming, and adult and continuing education. In keeping with that commitment Urbana University became the first university to gain recognition by the International Sustainability Council by developing a Sustainability Charter.
